This often-quoted definition of prayer handed down to us from the Reformers points us to three great truths as we approach our heavenly Father’s throne of grace:

1. Prayer is not initiated by us, but by God, as the Holy Spirit inclines our hearts and moves us to pray. Our part is to respond in obedience and faith.

2. Prayer is not a reshaping of God’s will to meet our desires, but a reshaping of our desires to conform to God’s will.

3. We can pray with great confidence, knowing God has prompted our prayer as a part of His divine plan and the fulfilling of His divine purpose.

What an awesome privilege to be included in God’s Kingdom work through the blessed work of prayer! Let us be found faithful, as “…men ought always to pray and not lose heart”. (Luke 18:1)
